The Knight

The Knight

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

I am intrested in where we’re going, I wonder how it will be, but I know I won’t mind doing dirty work if we have too, I am used to it anyway. However, I’m also wondering how my son, The Squire is going to feel about going on a little trip to H.D.M Ranch . Because he is used to dressing nice and prefers not to get his clothes dirty. Then I wonder how The Nun is going to handle the dust, the heat, especially seeing the calves being branded, and seeing how the livestock live in the area. Finally The Friar, for him I just hope he doesn’t find a liquor store or even a bar, because he won’t know when to stop and he’ll just possibly take off with drunks, or as I have been hearing people in the community call them “glonnies”.

The Friar

For me I wasn’t as interested in going on this little trip, as much as The Knight, and The Nun. But I felt how The Squire felt, I was more wanting to know where I could get a drink, because so far looking all over Tuba City, I have not seen a bar, or even a liquor store anywhere! But as I was observing the area, I saw quite a number of alcoholics or as I hear people in the community call them, “glonnies”, so as I was asking a lady where I could get a drink, she told me “Why don’t you ask the glonnies behind Speedway or by the Flea Market?” so that’s what I did as soon as could because I wanted to possibly go before or after the trip, so as I asked one of the glonnies behind Speedway, he told me I could have a sip from his water bottle. I did but it wasn’t water, but I told him I wanted a bar or a store, so he told me that I could go to Gray Mountain or a place further named Hanks Trading Post, they told me Gray Mountain is known as the “water hole” because when your “thirsty” you go there. Sadly I didn’t get to go because The Knight, The Nun already know me, so I had nothing.

The Nun

I’m very interested in where we’re going, I’ve never heard of the area where we’re going. The Knight just told me that there is going to be calves being branded, and to me it’s so heartbreaking to imagine young cattle have to be branded. I honestly don’t want to see them being branded, but when I did, the calves were crying loud trying to resist, and trying to avoid getting roped. So how it’s done is that The Knight has to rope the calf, flip it on it’s right side, then The Squire had to help hold it down, even though he didn’t want to, then The Knight got the branding bar that was already heated up really hot from the fire, then he pressed it on the calves side. Oh how terrifying that was to see, and another thing I felt bad for was to how the dogs or as the children call them “pubbies”, are being fed, they’re being fed leftover’s, which I think is disgusting, my dog would not like that if I fed him like that.

The Squire

Oh My Gosh! Why do we have to go out in the middle of nowhere to see a bunch of livestock. All the ugly red dust, dealing with the hot heat and branding calves. I don’t want to get dirty also smell like cow manure. When we first got to the dirt road, there’s a cattle guard and nothing but red sand and we drove off onto the road. I’ve seen only six homes, they were
